A little girl walked into our bakery holding hands with an old man. She looked nervous while he kept telling her, “You can pick any cake you want.” Something felt wrong, so I quietly asked her if she knew him. She shook her head no, and I immediately pulled her behind me, ready to call 911.
The man quickly stepped back and raised his hands. He explained that he had found the girl crying alone outside a grocery store after she became separated from her mother in the crowd. Security was already searching for her family, but whenever they tried to move her somewhere safe, she became even more frightened.
The old man pointed toward our strawberry cakes and admitted that they were the only thing that had made her stop crying. A security guard was waiting outside while we kept the girl safe inside the bakery. About five minutes later, a frantic woman rushed through the door, sobbing and calling her daughter’s name.
The little girl immediately ran into her mother’s arms. Before leaving, she turned around and hugged the old man tightly, whispering, “Thank you, Grandpa Stranger.” What had looked suspicious at first turned out to be a kind stranger simply trying to comfort a frightened child until her family found her.
