This morning, I was walking on the beach with my dog when we noticed this near the shore.

This was supposed to be a peaceful morning walk.
The sky was calm, the waves were soft, and then my dog froze.
He had never reacted like that before.
What I saw lying near the shoreline made my stomach twist. It looked wrong — too big, too sharp, too still. I tried to look away, but curiosity, fear, and something darker pulled me

I stood there, torn between stepping closer and turning back. The thing’s long, twisted form lay half-buried in wet sand, its gaping mouth frozen in a permanent snarl. My dog whined behind me, pulling gently on the leash as if begging me to leave it alone. The waves crept in and out, nudging its body just enough to make it look almost alive.

I zoomed in with my phone instead of my feet, snapping photos from a safe distance. Back home, I compared those images with pictures online, my heart pounding each time I saw something similar. When I finally matched it — a dead moray eel — the answer didn’t really calm me. It was unsettling to realize how easily something so fierce, so alien-looking, could be tossed at my feet by an ordinary tide, turning a simple walk into a reminder of how wild the world still is.
