After four months working on an oil site in Alaska, I finally returned home to my wife, Rachel. I expected a warm welcome, but the house was silent. Then I heard a baby crying from the kitchen. I rushed inside and froze when I saw a newborn girl in a bassinet on the table. Beside her were two notes, including one from Rachel.
Rachel wrote that she had found the baby on our doorstep and believed I had cheated on her while I was away. She said she had filed for divorce because she could no longer trust me. The other note was written in a hurry. It said the baby had been abandoned and begged whoever found her to care for her daughter. Her name was Ava.
I tried calling Rachel repeatedly, but she never answered. The authorities could not find her or identify Ava’s mother, leaving me alone with a child I had never expected to have. At first, I was confused and overwhelmed. I had returned home expecting my marriage to continue, but instead, everything had changed overnight.
As the days passed, Ava began depending on me. I learned how to feed her, comfort her, and care for her. Slowly, the mystery surrounding her mattered less than the little girl in front of me. Months became a year, and I realized that Ava had become the person who needed me most.
