Roughtail stingrays have venomous barbs near their tails. Even a dead stingray can still cause serious injuries because the barb remains dangerous, and venom may remain active for hours.
The biologist explained that a sting could cause excruciating pain, swelling, muscle cramps, nausea, infections, and, in rare cases, death. She even reminded me of Steve Irwin, who died after a stingray barb pierced his heart.
